Phil

Vibrations and waves of air particles penetrating the stillness, chipping away at the silence forming structures and patterns that provoke and please.

Hi, I'm Phil. My mind has always incubated tunes. My first hatchling was a hummed melody when I was two. My interest in recording also began at an early age when my dad brought home a tape to tape deck and a microphone. I learned recorder at school and had piano lessons, neither inspired me greatly. The drums called me when I reached secondary school. I began drum lessons with Andy Treacey (drummer for Faithless). A couple of years later I saw Dom Famularo which confirmed my drumming career choice. School came and went and I found myself studying popular music and recording at university, more for the drum lessons with Dave Hassall and meeting like minded people, than for the degree.
I drummed with many bands and played lots of gigs, but it wasn’t until three years later that things began to change.
It was a balmy autumn day in 2003. I'd arrived at my part time job, advising a school on musical equipment and installations. Everyone was inside and so I continued singing a heavy metal version of Amazing Grace as I got out of the car and walked to the school. I suddenly noticed that I wasn't alone but in my embarrassment decided that the best course of action was to pretend I hadn't seen anyone and walk as fast as I could to the office, still singing. Soon after arriving, my sole audience member came into the room!

Lara

The butterfly has flown and is attempting to breath outside of its cocoon!

Lara had been leading a parallel life to mine. From an early age she could imagine herself performing in a pop group, having found a love for singing and dancing. As she grew up, Lara had formal training in ballet, tap and contemporary dance, and studied performing arts at college. When Lara left uni she began earning a crust by teaching dance and performing at any given opportunity, and then found an opening at a school.
It was a balmy autumn day in 2003. Lara had arrived at her part time job. As she got out of the car she noticed someone look at her, turn and hurry away, all the while singing a strangely reminiscent song. Later Lara walked into the office to find that the strange song singer was in fact her new colleague!
This was the first moment that Lara and I met.

FireFliers

...inspired melodies weave poetry through an opulent soundscape, stirring the imagination and awakening the soul...

We soon began conversing about music and performing. I suggested we should work together and we began writing songs soon after that.
We found writing our first song, Life's a Circle, so much fun, that we wrote another nine in quick succession. We share a liking for much of the same music and soon found our own sound, drawing from Lara's influences of pop, dance, and drum ‘n’ bass and my influences of classical, heavy metal, electronic and jazz.
Since then we have written more songs and begun improving our initial recordings of these songs.
We have arranged and rehearsed acoustic versions of our songs and are currently working on the most effective way to perform the recorded versions of our songs.
We hope to be performing together as FireFliers very soon.
